FEATURE ARTICLE

Thank you once again to Andrew Christie, Andrew Christie Consulting, for his commentary "Biosecurity - where does the future lie?" in our Summer edition of  Across Borders.

"In discussing the possibility or potential of applying an AO model to selected areas of imported cargo, we must consider frst that the role of both defning and managing biosecurity
into the future lies with the department. That said, as industry, we need to be ready to demonstrate our preparedness to take on these activities and provide the required assurance
that we can do so, to the required standard.

'A hand behind their back': million dollar disadvantage for Australian-flagged ships

Freight and Trade Alliance director Travis Brooks-Garrett said domestic shippers would undoubtedly benefit from relaxing of regulations.

"Road pricing and road congestion for freight vehicles is increasingly becoming an issue," he said.

"Coastal shipping solutions wont make sense for every shipper, particularly just-in-time shippers where rail and road solutions may be more appropriate, but for some it will deliver significant operational and cost efficiencies.

"When you consider the $10 billion investment into Inland Rail and compare that to the efficiencies that could be achieved with the optimisation of coastal shipping, it's pretty hard to argue against." ... read more

Weekly Market Commentary

The USD crunched into reverse overnight. There is speculation that the Federal Reserve may end the balance sheet reduction process and reverse the tightening of monetary policy. This comes ahead of the FOMC meeting and rate decision next week. The Dollar had a sharp reversal in recent gains, with the EUR jumping to 1.1400, while the GBP spiked to 1.3160. This allowed equity markets to progress, with the prospect of a looser monetary policy. ... read more
