SPONSOR OF THE WEEK - mizzenit.com

FTA  member mizzenit.com has created a new capability for members which enables them to run container line sailing schedule searches direct from the FTA homepage, which can be accessed in the right column on https://www.ftalliance.com.au/ - under "Container Shipping Tools"

The intuitive schedules application is a single place to find sailing schedules and service information for 26 carriers and is a critical time saver for the logistics professional. These are the long term schedules that carriers provide on their individual websites.

Mizzenit.com is a freight buyers interface to find out which carriers can offer a service, get a rate quote and make the booking request.

Darren Burden, Chief Product Officer and co founder at the Mizzen Group says "We always ask our forwarder customers how mizzenit.com helps them, and the key things they share is it helps them keep their existing customers happy with fast turnaround quotes for non-contracted business, they are also able to win new business by quoting a greater volume of enquiries quickly."

Mizzenit.com has been in the market since September 2016 and works with 10 lines in Oceania to respond to spot market rate requests from their customers made via the mizzenit.com rate platform.

As well as using the schedule search function, FTA members will also be able to register for a free account that enables them use the rate request and booking function.

FEATURE ARTICLE

Thank you once again to Russell Wiese from Hunt & Hunt Lawyers for his article titled "The number one error made on import declarations - the valuation date" provided in our Summer edition of Across Borders.

"The number one error detected on import declarations by the Australian Border Force (ABF) in 2107 – 2018 was incorrect valuation date.

To put this in context, there were more valuation date errors detected than the combined number of tariff classification, use of tariff concession orders and invoice term errors combined.

However, this is not a case of customs brokers suddenly deciding to ignore the need to report the correct valuation date, rather, the ABF has changed how it measures compliance. "

DCN - In Praise of Victorian Rail Mode Subsidy

Australian Peak Shippers Association secretariat Travis Brooks-Garrett said the Victorian government should consider expanding the scheme. "There is no doubt that this program has been an incredible success and a credit to the Victorian Government," Mr Brooks-Garrett said.

"The scheme has enabled several rural exporters to commit to a modal shift, freeing up our roads and " .

Global Finance Report

Weekly Market Commentary

US equity markets continued to book gains and recover from the slaughter experienced in the final quarter of 2018. The key reasons for this dramatic reversal in fortune, has been the progress and process of the US/China trade negotiations and the Fed halting their hawkish monetary policy. The US/China trade talks appear to be coming to a successful conclusion, with the drafting of a 'MOU' and preparations have begun for a summit at Mar-a-Lago in March. The headline deal will drive the global growth narrative, but as usual, the devil is in the detail. There are rumours that the Chinese have driven a hard bargain and resisted any structural reform, restricting the agreement to one that addresses the trade imbalance directly and not the root cause. This would be a failure and not emblematic of the Trump reputation. ... read more

FTA SUBMISSION - BMSB INDEPENDENT REVIEW

As members will recall from our notice on 24 January 2019 titled "FTA advocacy succeeds - Independent Review into BMSB", the Inspector-General of Biosecurity (IGB), Dr Helen Scott-Orr PSM is conducting an Independent Review of the effectiveness of the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources' biosecurity measures to manage the risks of brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) entering Australia, and what if any improvements should be made.

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) representatives met with the IGB on 14 February 2019 to share preliminary findings.

Since then, the team have prepared a comprehensive submission based on extensive feedback from FTA members which was lodged on Friday 22 February 2019 for the consideration of the IGB - our summary of recommendations and the full submission is available HERE.
