DCN - Wharfies plan barbecue rally in campaign against DPWA

Freight and Trade Alliance director and Australian Peak Shippers Association secretariat Travis Brooks-Garrett said industry could not afford to revisit the protracted wharf disputes of the 1980s and 1990s.

"While the MUA has branded the strikes as 'small delays', a four-day full terminal closure in Melbourne has a significant effect on shippers and transport operators that can't be understated," he said.

"Our greatest fear is that the strikes spread to other terminals or continue beyond the four days." ... read more

DCN - INDUSTRY OPINION - Cost Recovery must Match Reform Risk

The question needs to be asked that if we are moving away from a one-size-fits-all regime, shouldn't Australian Trusted Traders pay a differentiated fee if their actions are reducing the risk for the ABF? Perhaps those traders remaining higher risk entities, absorbing valuable ABF resources, should be paying a commensurate rate?

In a similar manner to ATT, the safeguarding arrangements reduce the government's biosecurity resourcing burden allowing officers to focus on high risk consignments. This leads to an argument that those reducing risk should be rewarded with a differential cost recovery fee

FINANCE REPORT
Weekly Market Commentary

US Equity markets broke through record highs to close a week highlighted by the appearance of the Fed Chair, Jerome Powell, appearing before the House Financial Services Committee.

In his testimony he confirmed that global economic 'crosscurrents were emerging' suggesting the Federal Reserve was likely to act at the coming meeting. This was enough to spur share markets to record levels.

The US economy continues to charge and the Fed's telegraphed action would be to combat global crosscurrents.

US Bond Yields contradicted the Fed's intentions, to add further monetary stimulus, rising while the Dollar meandered. The EUR traded 1.1270, while the GBP moved back to 1.2570, still mired in Brexit and the Tory leadership battle.. ... read more
