Meeting the Trade Minister |
|
Trade Hub members met with the Minister for Trade, Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham, on 4 December 2019 in Canberra.
The purpose of the Roundtable was to discuss how government and industry could work better together to promote trade and investment outcomes to benefit Australian commerce (and Australians generally).
Issues discussed included ways to strengthen the World Trade Organisation, opportunities to further strengthen trade and investment with countries in our region, and priorities for new governance of digital trade.
Minister Birmingham agreed to meet regularly with Trade Hub members ... read more |

Infrastructure Surcharges - update on advocacy activity |
|
At a time when traders, logistics providers and the agriculture sector need it most, the Minister must stand up as a true leader.
Victoria International Container Terminal Limited (VICT) has become the first Australian stevedore to crack the $100 mark for Infrastructure Surcharges and have conveniently cleared the path for others to continue the pattern of spiralling increases in terminal access charges - a consolidated list of national stevedore Infrastructure Surcharges is available ... read more |

FTA / APSA engaged with Minister Horne's office on Friday 6 December 2019 - we understand that Deloitte will be reporting findings of the Port Pricing and Access Review to the Minister before Christmas and will be engaging with FTA / APSA early in the new year.
We thank members (particularly exporters) for highlighting the impacts of these crippling fees and encourage more formal correspondence to me at pzalai@FTAlliance.com.au to add weight to our advocacy with regulators. |

We hit the headlines in yesterday's Australian Financial Review tackling crippling Infrastructure Surcharges at our ports - thanks to APSA member Paul Goodman-Jones (Wilmar Gavilon) for supporting our advocacy efforts . |

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF PORT BOTANY - AUSTRALIA'S PREMIER PORT |
|
Thank you once again to Marika Calfas, Chief Executive Officer NSW Ports for her commentary in the Summer 2019 edition of Across Borders |
|
At the formal opening of Port Botany on 10 December 1979, Premier Neville Wran described the construction project as, "One of the biggest and most complex engineering projects ever undertaken in NSW".
The initial construction involved the reclamation of 260 hectares of port land, access roads, and community parkland using dredged sand from Botany Bay. Wharves, berths and land were constructed behind a two-kilometre armoured embankment designed to absorb and dissipate

FINANCE REPORT
Weekly Market Commentary
Markets closed the week on a high, as Non Farm Payrolls blew past expectations and the headline unemployment rate fell to the 1969 record low. The University of Michigan Economic Sentiment report reflected the bullish sentiment in the US economy. US Bond Yields rose and are now functioning in a 'normal' fashion, rising with demand, rather than Central Bank influence. This will result in inflationary pressures, a bi-product of a growing and healthy economy, which used to be feared?
