CO-ORDINATED APPROACH OF SUPPORT MEASURES The FTA team and many members are working extremely hard in a co-ordinated approach on a range of fronts including:- engagement with shipping lines, stevedores, ports and state governments - in terms of the latter we are looking for determinations of essential services to include the supply chain from the exporter / importer to the border
- engaging with airlines, cargo terminal operators and transport operators - some major forwarders have chartering passenger aircraft ensuring essential goods are being transported
- later today we will launch a service to support forwarders who are contemplating chartering aircraft but may not have the necessary volume requirements to be commercially viable
- to keep air cargo moving, costs will increase - we are working with key industry bodies to advocate to government for relief
- government relief package - we have made initial contact with government to determine the definition of the $50 million threshold bearing in mind the high value of disbursements made by customs brokers and forwarders
We have a range of other initiatives that we are also working on and will keep members up to date in coming days.
Our industry is tough, passionate, clever, innovative and resilient - stay strong and we will come out the other end of this.
Stay well everyone - very best regards Paul Paul Zalai - FTA / APSA |

FTA CPD BORDER COMPLIANCE PROGRAM POSTPONED & NEW DATES ANNOUNCED Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) has made the difficult decision this week to postpone our scheduled CPD Border Compliance Program sessions nationally for the safety of our members, their families, industry and the broader Australian community.
Please refer to our member notice sent out on Sunday evening – HERE. Importantly, the revised dates are within the 2020 /2021 CPD period (1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021) which will continue to provide 24 CPD points.
CPD Border Compliance Program – (1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021) NSW: Friday 5 & Saturday 6 February 2021 – Novotel Brighton Le-Sands VIC: Friday 12 & Saturday 13 February 2021 – Hyatt Place Essendon Fields QLD: Wednesday 17 February 2021 – Novotel Brisbane Airport WA: Saturday 20 February 2021 – Hyatt Regency Perth These dates have been chosen with coronavirus, winter, peak season, Christmas and school holidays in mind. We have also considered the very fluid nature of this situation. No one at this stage can safely put an end date on the restrictions to travel and meetings that are currently in place. We have looked for the period that provides as much flexibility to allow for the situation to improve and allow us all to resume normal business interactions.
Over the coming weeks and months FTA will be providing free webinars to keep members up to date with any important information to ensure you stay at the forefront of emerging issues. We thank you for your continued support and if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me on czalai@ftalliance.com.au or 02 9975 1878.

BOOSTING RAIL MODAL SHARE CRITICAL TO INDUSTRY AND COMMUNITY |
|
By ROY CUMMINS, Chief Executive Officer – Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd |
|
We are facing a flood of heavy vehicles on the streets of Brisbane. If we don't act now, our major motorways and even many suburban thoroughfares are at risk of becoming truck carparks. Simply put, we need to get more freight off the road and onto rail. It's one of the key reasons why the Port of Brisbane advocates for a dedicated freight rail connection to the current Inland Rail project, which stops some 38km out from the Port. While there is a pre-existing line that gets to the Port, it shares the network with passenger trains, leading to less reliability and greater cost. This ultimately means the brand new $10 billion-plus Inland Rail project will flow into the same inefficient, costly freight rail network we have in Brisbane today ... read more |
