COVID-19 - DEFERRAL OF DUTY, GST AND IMPORT PROCESSING CHARGES
Cash flow is the big ticket item with many importers looking for extended credit and jeopardising the financial viability of some customs brokers left outlaying millions of dollars on a monthly basis. There is genuine concern that some will not survive the financial hardship. FTA continues the industry advocacy. COVID-19 MEETING WITH THE DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER
At 1pm AEST today, FTA has been invited to participate in a teleconference to receive an update from the Deputy Prime Minister, the Chief Medical Officer, the Australian Border Force and the Secretary of the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications. The forum also provides an opportunity for an update from industry, discussion on the impact of internal and international border restrictions and emerging issues.

INTERNATIONAL COVERAGE - THE LOADSTAR 31.3.2020 MORE ANGER IN AUSTRALIA AS DP WORLD ANNOUNCES HIGHER TERMINAL ACCESS FEES Paul Zalai, director of the Freight & Trade Alliance, said the timing of DPW's increase to access fees for imports "couldn't be worse", and argued the charges should instead be recovered from shipping lines. "Import businesses will be bleeding over lockdown restrictions to Covid-19 during the next six months. Some will not survive the financial hardship," he added. He said the FTA was lobbying the government for deferral of duty, GST and import processing charges until the crisis is resolved. "Relief for the import sector is essential, otherwise we face a significant backlog of containers held under customs control, since taxes must be paid prior to release," added Mr Zalai ... read more |

WEBINAR - FREE & EXCLUSIVE TO FTA / APSA MEMBERS |
|
Time - 12pm to 1 pm (AEST) 14 April 2020 - REGISTER HERE
Presenter - Russell Wiese, Principal Hunt & Hunt Lawyers Tariff classification and TCOs – updates from the High Court and Full Federal Court
Over the past two months, two important Court judgements have been delivered that impact customs broker compliance in dealing with tariff classification and TCO applications. - High Court Pharm-A-Care decision – this case concerned the classification of vita-gummies – food versus medicament. However, the case has wider implications and provides guidance on general classification principles.
- Full Federal Court Alstom TCO decision – this case considered whether for the purpose of assessing a TCO application, a manned train is substitutable for a driverless train. The Full Federal Court decision is important for any customs broker that assists clients with TCO applications.
This webinar will also include compliance tips for customs brokers in managing scenarios impacted by COVID-19 |
