INDUSTRIAL ACTION UPDATE – A NEED FOR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION FOR PERMANENT REFORM

Port Botany congestion has been further impacted by recent adverse weather conditions and we now have another storm hanging over our heads with the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) imposing Protected Industrial Action (PIA) on Svitzer (a major tug service provider). While our focus has been on stevedore  operations, the "sleeper" may well be this dispute that could potentially have devastating impacts on shipping / berthing services - READ MORE (FTA/APSA LOGIN REQUIRED) 
APL SCOTLAND - PORT OF BRISBANE

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) has been advised of issues impacting certain containers off the APL Scotland at the Port of Brisbane. PORT OF MELBOURNE BUSINESS UPDATE AND TARIFF REBALANCING

STAKEHOLDER CONSULTATION: REVIEW OF AUSTRALIA'S MATURATION REQUIREMENTS FOR IMPORTED ALCOHOL

The Australian Border Force (ABF) is reviewing Australia's alcohol maturation requirements under section105A of the Customs Act 1901 (Customs Act).  Submissions are due by Wednesday 18 November to the ABF. The removal of the Five Voyage minimum has the potential to create a less dependable service for businesses moving freight around Australia via sea. The fifth webinar in the series is "Chain of Responsibility and Container Transport" with presentations from: 
  • Chris Dent (Director, Senior Underwriter at TT Club) will outline some of the risks and exposures of failures to comply with CTU requirements, from a liability and insurance perspective.
  • Laurence Jones (Director Global Risk Assessment - TT Club) will provide an overview of the top risks for Transport & Logistics Operators and also an analysis of the causes of bad packing incidents. Then, with a few examples and loss prevention actions, he will highlight the need to follow the CTU Code when packing containers.
  • James Cotis (Director & Owner at Logical Insurance Brokers) will make some general observations of HVNL, consider the penalties, discuss relevant insurances and review a potential insurance coverage checklist.
  • Neil Chambers (Director CTAA) will explain details about the campaign including our free, world-class e-Learning course and associated resources.

CUSTOMS COMPLIANCE UPDATE

The October 2020 Goods Compliance Update has been released by the ABF.  Russell Wiese (Principal, Hunt & Hunt Lawyers) will provide commentary on the key customs compliance aspects of the report including:
  1. compliance, audit and infringement notice trends;
  2. modern slavery reporting requirements for freight forwarders and customs brokers;
  3. expectations of customs brokers when completing declarations;
  4. customs broker licensing issues;
  5. subcontracting of customs brokerage services
Russell will also provide an update on the new dumping duty rates applying to Chinese aluminium extrusions and further guidance from the Anti-Dumping Commission as to what goods are covered by the dumping duties.

The revised dates for our events fall within the 2020/2021 customs broker licensing period (1 April 2020 to  31 March 2021) and will continue to provide 24 CPD points. 6 additional CPD points will need to be obtained in Stream A.
