WEEK IN REVIEW
REGIONAL COMPREHENSIVE ECONOMIC PARTNERSHIP (RCEP)

Australia, China, Korea, Japan, New Zealand and the ASEAN nations have signed the long negotiated Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).  RCEP is a massive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) which covers 58% of Australia's two way trade in goods and services.

Russell Wiese, Principal Hunt & Hunt Lawyers has provided a commentary addressing:
  • Benefits of RCEP

  • When will it commence?
  • Can other parties join?
  • Does this improve the noodle bowl?
  • The assessment to be undertaken
  • The elephant in the room

As outlined in the above commentary, the Morrison Government is hoping that the symbolic gesture of signing RCEP will reset China Australia trade relationships.  However, if the Chinese government maintains, or increases, restrictions on the import of Australian goods, RCEP may face difficulties in obtaining parliamentary approval.

Compounding these concerns, we note yesterday's advice from ANL & CMA CGM that they will suspend acceptance of cargoes of logs, timber, wood, treated or untreated etc from origin Victoria and Queensland to all ports in China. This will also impact cargo that has departed Queensland and Victoria on 31st October & 11th November respectively. Impacted cargo, including on route, will need to be redirected or cancelled from loading to China with costs to be for the account of the shipper - READ MORE
THE IMPORTANCE OF OPEN TRADE FOR AUSTRALIA'S POST COVID ECONOMIC RECOVERY
Thank you once again to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) for their commentary in the Spring 2020 edition of Across Borders.
Open trade will be a vital element of any economic recovery, and that of our trading partners. It has expanded our global economy, enhanced our standards of living and lifted people out of poverty in our region. It has placed Australia in a position where, in the middle of an unprecedented global pandemic, we recorded in June our 30th consecutive monthly trade surplus - despite the disruptive impact of COVID-19 on economic activity, including on key service export sectors, tourism and education.
