Yesterday the Assistant Treasurer, Michael Sukkar, Assistant Minister for Customs, Jason Wood, and the Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Ben Morton, released the Deregulation Taskforce consultation paper inviting input from business and individuals on how to streamline excise (and excise-equivalent customs duty) administration for fuel, beer and spirits.

The paper is attached and available on the Deregulation Agenda website - Streamlining excise administration for fuel and alcohol | Deregulation (pmc.gov.au).

The joint media release is attached and also available on the Assistant Minister's website - The Hon Ben Morton MP | Ministers Media Centre (pmc.gov.au).

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) is continuing close engagement with the Deregulation Taskforce and are supporting its comprehensive review aimed at cutting the regulatory overheads for business, supporting new investments in our fuel security and world-leading beverage manufacturing sector.

The initial engagement with business and industry leaders was aimed at getting a 'factory floor' perspective of their day-to-day operations.  The Deregulation Taskforce has now identified a number of potential opportunities to improve the excise and excise-equivalent customs duty system, through both administrative and legislative reforms. These are outlined in the discussion paper. We welcome your feedback by 31 August 2021.

Additional information on the Government's Deregulation Agenda is available on the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet's Deregulation Agenda website.

The Deregulation Taskforce is seeking feedback by 31 August 2021 and have extended an invitation to FTA/APSA members to discuss any issues raised in the consultation paper and related ploicy matters.

Our engagement with the Deregulation Taskforce is being managed by Susan Danks (Head of Customs and Regultory Compliance - FTA/APSA) who can be contacted at sdanks@FTAlliance.com.au
