PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES ENQUIRY INTO THE EFFICIENCY OF OUR MARITIME LOGISTICS INDUSTRY |
|
Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) welcome the announcement of a Productivity Review into the ongoing shipping crisis. |
|
Last weeks announcement by the Prime Minister stated the review will examine challenges in Australia's maritime logistics system, noting these relate to 'competition, industrial relations, infrastructure constraints and technology uptake'. |
|
|
Our attention is now centred on the all important terms of reference of the review.
MEDIA
As quoted in the Daily Cargo News and MHD Supply Chain, FTA/APSA are advocating for the scope of the review to be wide ranging and go beyond the probes initiated in other jurisdictions such as the US "we need to take this opportunity for an independent review to focus on all aspects of the international shipping and logistics sector",
news.com reported on empty container management and restricted capacity concernsAPSA's Mr Zalai told news.com.au a lack of ship capacity was now a bigger issue than containers with not enough vessels, for instance, plying key routes from Australia ... crucial for agriculture exports. "We're thrilled the government has heard our cries and that there will be a Productivity Commission review into this because there is no easy answer and there needs to be thorough and independent research," he said. The FTA/APSA advocacy has also been recognised internationally in an article published by the highly acclaimed JOC Shippers, carriers welcome Australian federal maritime probe:
The go-ahead for the probe followed an extensive lobbying campaign by representatives of the FTA, APSA, and agricultural exporter groups, who have had almost daily contact with Morrison's representatives and senior government officials."Where necessary, we would encourage the introduction of progressive regulation by the Australian government to stimulate commercial opportunities to complement existing trade modernization initiatives," Zalai said. That includes changes to container detention practices, similar to the current review by the US Federal Maritime Commission and a shift in the payment of terminal access charges from shippers to carriers, Zalai added.
TREASURY During a bi-lateral meeting with Treasury officials on Thursday 2 December 2021, FTA/APSA provided key policy considerations to support the planning of the review's terms of reference - READ MORE
FTA/APSA look forward to further federal government announcements and supplying evidence to the review. |
