Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) incorporated extensive member feedback into a submission to "Amending the Australian Postal Corporation (Performance Standards) Regulations 2019".

On 6 December 2023, the Government announced reforms to enable Australia Post to boost productivity, increase its focus on parcels, and improve long-term financial sustainability.

The implementation of key elements of the reform package require that the Regulations be amended to:

  • change the performance standards that Australia Post is required to meet regarding the frequency and speed of mail delivery,
  • deregulate the Priority Mail service, and
  • update the geographic classification used in the performance standards for retail outlets."

In summary, FTA is of the view that modernising the postal service's offerings should specifically ensure that all products used in eCommerce can be tracked throughout the postal delivery chain. While FTA support the idea of relaxing letter delivery timeframes, it is also essential to introduce a basic tracking or delivery scanning option for these services. This would provide businesses and consumers with the ability to monitor their letter deliveries with confidence, reinforcing trust in the postal system.
