Terminal Access Charges return to the Media Spotlight
Just when we were wondering how to give the matter of high and unregulated stevedore-imposed Terminal Access Charges (TACs) more oxygen, we were given a generous free kick by Patrick Terminals.
Their campaign has attempted to dis-credit our extensive media coverage that has focused on cost-of-living pressures and challenges facing regional exporters caused by a combination of restricted capacity, rail interface concerns, a lack of vessel schedule reliability, high freight rates, a spate of surcharges and the rapid growth of 'ransom charges' at our wharves and empty container parks - further detail
HERE
.
The Australian Finacial Review separately released an honest appraisal of challenges and opportunities as seen through the eyes of Port of Melbourne CEO, Saul Cannon. Of critical importance to our advocacy, the article addresses these same shipping costs and spiraling stevedore-imposed TACs themes - the latter to be addressed in the much-anticipated Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Stevedore Monitoring report (scheduled November 2024) - refer

FTA and APSA trust that the federal government will see through this latest strategic move by Patrick and will be guided by the upcoming ACCC analysis, broader industry engagement and the Productivity Commission's well-considered recommendation to introduce a Mandatory Code providing controls and oversight on stevedore landside charges.

Australian Border Force intercepts shipment of almost 12 million illegal cigarettes
Australian Border Force (ABF) officers seized more than 12 million illicit cigarette sticks which were detected inside one single consignment arriving into NSW last week. The shipment, which arrived from China at the Sydney Container Examination Facility on Friday (23 August 2024), had been mis-declared as a vending machine, and had evaded duty estimated at almost $15.3 million. ABF Commander Ken McKern said the seizure had taken money out of the hands of criminals.
