Dear Tom

As we move further into 2025, global trade dynamics are facing significant shifts, with freight rates declining, supply-demand imbalances emerging, and geopolitical tensions escalating.

The Drewry World Container Index (WCI) has now fallen for eight consecutive weeks, down 34% since early January, reflecting the impact of increased shipping capacity and easing demand pressures. While rates remain higher than pre-pandemic levels, carriers have announced rate restoration measures in an attempt to stabilise the market.

Beyond pricing, geopolitical risks continue to shape global logistics strategies. The Trump administration's aggressive trade policies, including new tariffs and the recent announcement of restrictions on Chinese-built vessels, are expected to restructure shipping patterns and increase costs for Australian importers and exporters. At the same time, the Red Sea crisis remains unresolved, with major carriers still avoiding the Suez Canal, adding transit delays and additional mileage to key trade routes.

This edition provides a comprehensive update on freight rate movements, carrier strategies, geopolitical developments, and regulatory shifts, ensuring you stay informed on the evolving landscape of global shipping.
