FTA's General Manager Freight Policy & Operations, Tom Jensen, recently joined Greg Amanatidis on Navia's Supply Chain Unchained podcast to discuss one of the most pressing and persistent issues facing Australia's supply chain — Terminal Access Charges (TACs) and Empty Container Park (ECP) fees.
While stevedores and terminals have achieved operational efficiencies over the years, these gains have come at a heavy cost to industry. Charges have climbed year after year without caps, guarantees, or regulatory oversight, leaving importers, exporters, freight forwarders, and logistics providers bearing the brunt.
Some terminals claim these fees represent a minor cost in the broader supply chain — but for exporters competing in per-unit markets, TACs now often exceed the cost of international freight and local transport combined, pushing already slim margins to unsustainable levels and, for some, borderline unviable.
With most major terminals shortly expected to issue 60-day notices for further increases effective 1 January, this is a timely and important discussion for all sectors of the supply chain to follow.
