Austrade Seeks FTA Members Feedback on Simplified Trade System Pain Points

Following our recent meeting with Austrade, FTA is sharing an important industry survey now underway as part of the Government's ongoing work on the Simplified Trade System (STS). Austrade, together with border and regulatory agencies, is seeking FTA member feedback on how businesses are experiencing Australia's cross-border trade system — especially in relation to the six key 'pain points' previously identified through the STS Taskforce.

These pain points include:

  1. Opaque and inconsistent processes – businesses face variable communication response times and uncertainty when seeking support to navigate the supply chain.
  2. Hard to access information – navigating multiple information sources can be confusing, time consuming and costly.
  3. Complex regulations – navigating complex regulations is challenging and costly.
  4. Inflexible technologies – businesses experience inflexible, difficult to use technology experiences across multiple agencies.
  5. Duplicative processes – businesses need to enter information multiple times and complete manual documentation.
  6. Border delays – impacting the ability of businesses to plan their operations and predict the arrival of their goods.

The Government is now looking to understand how these issues have evolved over the past five years, with industry insights helping shape future reforms to streamline and modernise the trade environment.
FTA encourages all members to complete the survey and ensure industry views are heard.
The questionnaire takes around 10 minutes, can be completed anonymously, and closes Friday, 5 December 2025.

Complete the survey here:

For further queries, Austrade can be contacted via Ramesh Murthy – ramesh.murthy@austrade.gov.au, with interview requests directed to Ria Nerlikar – ria.nerlikar@nousgroup.com.

FTA will continue to work closely with Austrade and partner agencies to ensure member feedback directly informs improvements across Australia's trade, border and regulatory systems.

Macquarie move on Qube signals major shift in freight landscape

Qube Holdings has confirmed it is backing a takeover proposal from Macquarie Asset Management (MAM), valuing the logistics giant at around $11.6 billion.
Under the indicative, non-binding offer announced on Monday, 23 November 2025, MAM would acquire all Qube shares for $5.20 cash per share via a scheme of arrangement. The offer represents a significant premium on Qube's recent trading levels.

The bid follows an earlier, lower unsolicited approach and was improved after limited due diligence access. Any dividends declared before completion will reduce the final offer price.
Qube has granted Macquarie exclusive due diligence until 1 February 2026, with the board signalling it intends to unanimously recommend the deal — provided no superior offer emerges and an independent expert deems the transaction in shareholders' best interests.
Chairman John Bevan said the proposal reflects the strength of Qube's operations, assets and culture. However, the company emphasised there is no guarantee the offer will progress to a binding agreement. READ MORE (story credit DCN)

SEA FREIGHT

Maersk Signals Partial Return to the Red Sea as Conditions Improve

Maersk has confirmed it is preparing to resume transits through the Red Sea and Suez Canal as soon as conditions allow, following nearly two years of diversions around Africa due to Houthi attacks. Speaking alongside the Suez Canal Authority in Egypt, CEO Vincent Clerc said improving security in Gaza and the Bab al-Mandab Strait has given the carrier confidence to plan a staged return, with crew safety remaining the top priority.
The Suez Canal Authority expects partial Maersk transits from early December, with a gradual normalisation to follow. A resumption of East–West traffic through the corridor would carry major implications for global shipping, potentially easing the elevated freight rates that have persisted since the regional conflict escalated.

AIR FREIGHT

New Airfreight Representation at FTA & APSA

We're pleased to welcome Matthew Tilbrook, Airfreight Manager Australia at AGS World Transport, as the new FTA/APSA Member Representative – Airfreight.

This voluntary role plays a vital part in shaping our airfreight advocacy, drawing on real operational insight to support policy work across the sector. Matthew brings strong industry experience and a practical, on-the-ground perspective that will benefit all members.

Matthew succeeds Michael Bennett (UAC Australia), who has supported FTA for an outstanding thirteen years. We sincerely thank Michael for his dedication and the stability he provided through some of the industry's toughest years — including the pandemic.

Welcome aboard, Matt — and thank you, Michael, for your long-standing service.

Sydney Airport welcomes NSW Renewable Fuel Strategy as pathway to local SAF production
FTA member Sydney Airport has backed the NSW Government's new Renewable Fuel Strategy, calling it a major step toward home-grown Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and stronger national fuel security.

CEO Scott Charlton says the $130 million funding package and supply-chain focus position NSW to lead the country—especially with 40% of Australia's jet fuel uplift happening at Sydney Airport. He also flagged Kurnell as a prime site for a future SAF refinery.

DAFF Honours Sal Milici for Outstanding Biosecurity Leadership
We are pleased to share that FTA team member Sal Milici has been recognised by DAFF in the 2025 Australian Biosecurity Awards for his "dedicated efforts in advancing biosecurity awareness across the international freight and logistics sector."
A well-deserved acknowledgement of Sal's leadership, advocacy, and long-standing commitment to strengthening Australia's biosecurity system. Further details available
 HERE.

FTA/APSA Meet with the Inspector-General of Biosecurity

Sal Milici met with Inspector-General of Biosecurity, Dr Melissa McEwan, as part of early consultation on the IGB's forthcoming annual review work plan. The discussion followed the IGB's system-wide assessment of regulatory maturity, which highlighted the need for greater transparency, consistency and clarity in the way biosecurity non-compliance is managed.

The findings closely echo long-standing FTA/APSA advocacy for a fair, predictable and accountable compliance framework that protects Australia while supporting legitimate trade. The meeting provided an opportunity to share whole-of-supply-chain insights and outline practical improvements to strengthen confidence in the regulatory system. FTA/APSA will continue to engage with the IGB as the 2024–25 work plan is finalised and further reviews progress.

AFP Pushes for Global Crackdown on Illicit Tobacco and Extremism
AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett is heading to the INTERPOL General Assembly in Morocco, calling on international police chiefs to help choke off illicit tobacco flows into Australia and boost intelligence-sharing on extremist and hate-based groups, including Nazi supporters.
The AFP will also reaffirm its backing for INTERPOL's Project Blue Pacific, sign new crime-fighting MOUs with key partners, and strengthen joint efforts to disrupt offshore organised crime networks before they reach our shores. READ MORE
ABF Blocks Major Offshore Vape-Smuggling Operation

The Australian Border Force has intercepted more than 600,000 illegal vapes—with an estimated street value of $30 million—after intelligence shared with ABF officers posted in Beijing led to the targeting of almost 70 high-risk containers. Many of the shipments were falsely declared as everyday goods such as glassware, lamps and books to evade detection.
The operation is a strong demonstration of the ABF's offshore disruption strategy, with international cooperation enabling the identification of linked consignments and strengthening intelligence on organised crime supply chains. Between 1 January and 31 October 2025, ABF offshore referrals have prevented over 524 million cigarette sticks, 1 million vapes and 918 tonnes of loose-leaf tobacco from entering Australia. READ MORE
