DCN - Middle East conflict: what does it mean for Australian shippers?

Escalating conflict in the Middle East has resulted in immediate cost pressures for Australian importers and exporters, with shipping lines introducing war-risk surcharges and adjusting services through key global hubs.

Although Australia has limited direct container trade through the region, the disruption is flowing through transhipment networks, reducing capacity and extending transit times. The most immediate impact is financial — new surcharges applying at short notice, in some cases to cargo already booked or on the water, creating unbudgeted cost exposure for cargo owners.

Freight & Trade Alliance General Manager – Freight Policy & Operations, Tom Jensen, warned that the surcharge environment highlights broader structural issues in the Australian regulatory framework:

"The immediate concern for Australian importers and exporters is the imposition of new war-risk surcharges and cost increases at short notice. Where these charges reference exclusions under overseas regulatory frameworks, it again highlights the need for greater transparency and commercial certainty for Australian cargo owners."
