DCN - OPINION: AI not the answer to Customs Broker skills shortages

FTA Director and Co-Founder Paul Zalai has contributed an opinion piece to the April | May 2026 edition of DCN Magazine, examining Australia's structural shortage of licensed customs brokers and the role of artificial intelligence in supporting the profession.

Mr Zalai highlights that while AI can assist with data extraction, validation, risk assessment and audit readiness, it cannot replace the statutory judgement, accountability and professional responsibility of licensed customs brokers.

The article reinforces that addressing the skills shortage will require coordinated action across recruitment, training, diversity initiatives and regulatory reform — with AI serving as an enabler, not a replacement.
