The Summary Podcast - Western Sydney Airport
Sunday, October 25, 2026
Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI) has officially commenced operations, marking a historic milestone as Australia's first major international airport to open in more than half a century.
The airport today welcomed its inaugural domestic flight with Jetstar and is set to launch its first international service tomorrow with Air New Zealand, signalling the beginning of a new era for passenger travel and freight connectivity in Australia.
Operating as a 24-hour airport, WSI is expected to significantly enhance national supply chain efficiency, provide greater aviation capacity for the Sydney region, and strengthen Australia's access to global markets. The airport's freight capabilities are already demonstrating the potential to improve delivery times, increase export opportunities and support economic growth across Western Sydney and beyond.
Industry leaders and government representatives have highlighted the strategic importance of the development, including WSI CEO Simon Hickey, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King, and executives from Jetstar, Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, Qantas, Vietjet and Fiji Airways - refer to the official WSI
