DCN 15.4.2019 - RO-RO VESSELS TO FACE HEIGHTENED SURVEILLANCE NEXT BMSB SEASON

Freight and Trade Alliance border and biosecurity advocate Andrew Crawford said the other significant difference for next season could be the introduction of mandatory offshore treatment of target high risk goods shipped in sealed six-sided containers for LCL and FAK shipments.

"This was the Department's preferred position for 2018/19 and FTA and others advocated against this due to several commercial considerations," Mr Crawford said.

"FTA will continue to work with the department to tease out the detail of this through ongoing consultation and the information sessions that Department is currently conducting."

Townsville is first Port of call for new vessel out of Japan

The colossal 199m bright red car carrier Niagara Highway, arrived in port today on its first voyage from the ship yard in Yokohama, Japan unloading 250 motor vehicles over multi-cargo Berth 4.

Constructed by Imabari Shipbuilding Co.,Ltd, Niagara Highway sets a new standard in the K Line fleet. Offering high adaptability with variety of cargo, the increase in vessel's size allows large-scale cargo to be loaded, even a bullet train can be loaded. This capability is appealing to the mining industry; as large underground specialised mining equipment is often transported through the Port.

Acting General Manager Business Development, David Sibley said the arrival of the new vessel demonstrates the global demand on port infrastructure.

"Globally ships are being built bigger and better.  This resonates with the prediction of trade volume to treble over the next 30 years."

"The Channel Upgrade Project ensures that Townsville remains Northern Australia's transport link to the world. Keeping globally competitive is critical for business sustainability."

Global Finance Report

Weekly Market Commentary

Markets rallied strongly to close the trading week, boosted by strong corporate earnings from the  United States, lead by JP Morgan. The Banks love rising interest rates and they have made hay while the sun shines, despite the Fed moving to a more dovish monetary policy. The rhetoric coming from the Fed, ECB and IMF has been negative, with global growth warnings, but progress on the US/China Trade negotiations has boosted confidence. Chinese exports exploded in their latest data release, more than doubling expectations, which is a very positive sign for global commodity demand. This boosted the commodity currencies, with the AUD jumping to 0.7170, while the NZD pushed up to 0.6770.. ... read more
