Thank you once again to NSW Ports for their update an an initiative to reduce emissions - detailed commentary available in the Autumn 2019 edition of Across Borders

"The incentive provides an excellent opportunity to encourage clean and climate friendly shipping. Collectively our industry has the potential to make significant gains on important sustainability goals such as protection of air quality and mitigation of climate change. We are committed to improving environmental outcomes at our ports. The scheme applies to vessel related charges at Port Botany and Port Kembla from 1 January 2019. In this way we reward customers and port users that share our commitment to environmental improvement" said Marika Calfas, CEO NSW Ports.

MEDIA RELEASE: Lead industry advocate John Park joins the alliance

In what is a major development for the Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and the Australian Peak Shippers Association, highly respected industry advocate John Park is to commence on 18 June 2019 as the alliance's Head of Business Operations.

FTA is a leading industry body representing 350 major importers and freight forwarding businesses and serves as Secretariat to APSA being the peak body as designated by the Federal Minister of Infrastructure and Transport to protect the interests of Australia's cargo owners and shippers in respect to shipping and international logistics services.

Paul Zalai, Director and co-founder of FTA, announced in a member notice earlier today that Mr Park will support members nationally on operational matters, will manage the alliance's growing number of members in Western Australia and will advocate for positive reform on operational and policy committees.

Mr Zalai stated "At a personal level, I have had the privilege of working alongside John in various capacities for over 25 years and am excited in knowing the tremendous value that he will add to our administrative and advocacy team."

GSF GLOBAL LOGISTICS 2019

Australia hands the baton to the UK

The Global Shippers Forum (GSF) is the world's leading trade association for shippers (importers and exporters) engaged in international trade.

The Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) is a long-standing member of the GSF and together with Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and ICHCA Australia, hosted the highly successful GSF and ICHCA International Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Conference in Melbourne in May 2018 attracting 350 delegates including a broad international representation.

At that AGM, Travis Brooks-Garrett  (APSA Secretariat and FTA Director) accepted an invitation and was later ratified as a GSF Board Director.

At the conclusion of the AGM and conference we proudly handed the baton to another "FTA" (the United Kingdom's "Freight Transport Association") who will be hosting the 2019 conference in central London from Monday 16 to Thursday 19 September.

Join us in London

The programme includes attendance at the 2-day FTA/GSF Global Logistics Conference, featuring presentations and debates on the key issues and opportunities facing global shippers at this time - refer HERE.

The main venue for the meeting is Kings Place situated close to Kings Cross St Pancras stations to the north of the City of London. www.kingsplace.co.uk This is a new development area with extensive hotel accommodation and social attractions, as well as being a short Underground or cab ride to the West End and City destinations.

The highlights of the 4-day event are

Monday 16 September: GSF Annual General Meeting and Members meeting, followed by Chairman's welcome reception

Tuesday 17 September: FTA/GSF Global Logistics Conference
Wednesday 18 September: FTA/GSF Global Logistics Conference

Thursday 19 September: Joint meeting with British Shippers Council members, followed by optional site visit(s).

An event brochure is available HERE
Registration (note early bird prior to 30 June) available HERE

We are in regular contact with the event organisers and will be providing further detail in coming weeks. In the interim, if you require any further detail, please contact me direct at czalai@FTAlliance.com.au or 02 9975 1878.

We look forward to you joining us at this major international industry event.

Weekly Market Commentary

US equity markets finished a strong week, with the biggest gains since November 2018, driven by Central Banks.

The latest Non Farm Payroll number disappointed, weaker than expected, thus raising the prospect of a Fed rate cut.

We are moving into the Obama style paradoxical market, where 'bad economic news' is 'good economic news'.

The poor economic data is driving Central Banks to cut rates and introduce 'QE' policies, driving equity markets, with cheap money.

This has undermined the US Dollar, with the EUR rising to 1.1330, while the GBP moved up to 1.2730.
