"We've also taken up membership of Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA), which  will provide policy and operational support for meat industry participants, including on topics like the concentration of ownership of foreign shipping lines that serve exporters, rising landside transport costs and growing concerns about diminishing competition in Australia's rail and port supply chains."

DCN -  STINK BUG SOLUTIONS EXPAND INTO SOUTH AUSTRALIA

FOLLOWING the success of recent events hosted in Fremantle, ACFS Port Logistics and Freight & Trade Alliance are expanding coverage to support the South Australian import sector in the lead up to the brown marmorated stink bug season.

ACFS Port Logistics is a large, privately-owned container logistics operator in Australia, moving more than 1.2m TEU annually.

The previous 2018–19 BMSB season stretched Australia's border biosecurity system close to breaking point and had severe impacts on sections of the shipping and importing industries.

In response and as a part of a national education campaign, Andrew Crawford from FTA will lead a technical session focused on operational requirements to mitigate the risk of BMSB incursion through treatment options, increased utilisation of the 19.2. Automatic Entry Processing for Commodities Approved Arrangements and new "safeguarding arrangement" options.

DCN - VICTORIAN REVIEW OF PORT ACCESS AND PRICING ANNOUNCED

Freight & Trade Alliance director Paul Zalai said he hoped the Victorian government would "champion the cause to support Australian exporters and importers that are suffering at the hands of the stevedores".

He said, like every other business, stevedores should be either absorbing operating costs or passing these on to their commercial shipping line clients who in turn can commercially negotiate terms with shippers.

"I don't blame the stevedores for looking for alternate models as the introduction of infrastructure surcharges is obviously a lot easier way to remain profitable," Mr Zalai said.

"While there's no suggestion of collusion between the parties, it is clearly a case of 'follow the leader' with each stevedore taking it in turn to ratchet up the pricing."
