| Infrastructure Surcharges - update on advocacy activity |
|
The Minister for Ports and Freight, Hon Melissa Horne MP, has invited FTA / APSA to attend a roundtable discussion on Victorian port and freight priorities (30 January 2020). This engagement will provide an update on the progress of the initiatives underway, including the release of the preliminary findings and policy recommendations to inform the Port of Melbourne Port Pricing and Access Review.
Importantly, this forum will provide an opportunity for the government to respond to concerns including our advocacy position to egulate against the imposition of stevedore Infrastructure Surcharges / Terminal Access Charges. |

ATN - concern at Patrick nightshift reversal
FTA director Paul Zalai notes that "it's difficult to reconcile the ever-increasing landside infrastructure charges levied by Patrick Terminals with this reduction in night shift service levels."
"The market anticipates that Patrick will announce further infrastructure fee increases in February for a March 2020 commencement.
"Yet, these landside service levels are being implemented, divorced from the corporate intent of Patrick to leverage more revenue from the landside, and way from their traditional customers the shipping lines." ... read more |

Weekly Market Commentary US Markets closed softer on Friday after a week of record gains. Geo-Political events surrounding Iran and the US have settled, after the assassination of the Iranian General and the Iranian faux response. The Iranians launched a missile attack in response to the assassination, but was misdirected (whether accidental or deliberate), allowing the US to de-escalate tensions by imposing further economic tariffs, rather than a military tit-for-tat. This has resulted in markets concentrating on economic matters and US equities pushed into record territory once again.
