Cruise ship Vasco da Gama makes its debut visit

CMV Australia cruise ship Vasco da Gama made its debut visit to Fremantle on 13 January for a summer season of homeporting. Ports Minister Alannah MacTiernan welcomed the ship which will provide five voyages this summer. Destinations will include regional ports and extended shore excursions.Vasco da Gama's 1,220 guest capacity more than doubles that of CMV's Astor, which had been based in Fremantle from 2013 to last year.

OUTER HARBOUR 

New facilities to improve Kwinana Bulk Terminal

Ports Minister Alannah MacTiernan formally opened a new workshop, offices and amenities at Fremantle Ports' Kwinana Bulk Terminal on 17 December to help support expanding bulk trades. The new $3.9 million facilities replace decades-old, outmoded buildings used by more than 100 port staff. The new complex is part of Fremantle Ports' broader planning work to maximise the potential of Kwinana Bulk Terminal, which is adjacent to the Kwinana industrial area.

PORT OPERATIONS 

New container crane for Patrick Terminals

Crane ship Zhen Hua 24 arrived on 27 December with a new post-panamax crane for the Patrick container terminal. Patrick now has four post-panamax cranes and Fremantle's other container terminal, DP World, has three. The new crane can handle ships with a 48-metre beam. According to the Waterline #64 report by the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics, compared to other Australian container ports, Fremantle has the best wharfside crane rate.

Dynamically using Australian innovation  

Fremantle Ports led container ports around the world with the application of under-keel clearance technology, designed by Australian company OMC International. Now it's used by many Australian and international ports. Watch the video to find out more.

 
BIOSECURITY ALERT: RED IMPORTED FIRE ANT

Fremantle port workers, residents and businesses are asked to report sightings of unfamiliar ants, following detection of one of the world's worst invasive ant species in Fremantle last November. Treatment and surveillance activities are underway, and a quarantine area has been established. Find out more here.
