CEO WELCOME
________________

Welcome to this month's Port of Brisbane News.

It was pleasing to see the State Government declare a Port Dedicated Freight Precinct from Fisherman Islands to the Gateway Bridge. This has been a key issue raised through PBPL's Landside Logistics Forum and other avenues, and we've continued to advocate with customers and industry partners on behalf of the port community. I thank our customers and stakeholders for their support; the declaration will improve efficiencies for operators in the area, including those in our Port West estate.

We are also extremely proud to have been awarded a 5-star GRESB rating for our Sustainability initiatives from the globally recognised GRESB survey.

Safety remains front of mind at the Port; the recent arrival of the summer storm season is a timely reminder to ensure our workplaces and our homes are well prepared for unpredictable weather.

Our teams have also been out supporting the local community this month, including at the annual Quandamooka Jarjums Camp along with DP World and Svitzer Australia.

GOVERNMENT DECLARES PORT DEDICATED FREIGHT PRECINCT
________________

In mid-October, the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads declared the Port Dedicated Freight Precinct (DFP). Developed in partnership with Brisbane City Council, the Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd, the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator, and industry, the DFP allows additional heavy vehicle mass and dimension exemptions for the movement of freight travelling between Port of Brisbane and key adjacent customer locations in the Lytton and Hemmant area, including the Port West industrial estate at Lytton.

The DFP provides access for heavier 30m A-Doubles and allows floats and low loaders to be used for the carriage of over dimensional cargo on container flat racks and in open top containers.

Together with our customers and industry stakeholders, PBPL has advocated for an expanded freight precinct. In particular, we thank our Landside Logistics Forum stakeholders who have provided input and feedback over a number of years.

PBPL ACHIEVES 5-STAR GRESB RATING
________________

PBPL has received a 5-star GRESB rating – a globally recognised assessment that evaluates sustainability performance and best practices for assets worldwide, such as Port of Brisbane.  PBPL was also the top placed port company in the "Transport: Port Companies" category, outranking 16 other port companies from around the world.

With our whole-of-business Sustainability Strategy now entering its third year, the rating reflects the significant progress we're making against our short and long-term targets to ensure the Port is developed in a sustainable way, to benefit all stakeholders.

Much of this progress is due to the strong relationships with our customers, stakeholders and the community, and we thank them for their support.  Please read our 2019/20 Sustainability Report or watch our video to find out more.

 CONTAINER STACKING REMINDER
________________

As the summer storm season is upon us, PBPL would like to remind all operators to take the necessary precautions to ensure safe stacking of containers, including those stacked on fence lines, to minimise the risk of toppling or creating other safety hazards. The Brisbane Port Land Use Plan (LUP) sets out requirements to correctly stack, store and handle shipping containers.

Please
click here to read the relevant extract.

PBPL asks that all tenants and operators take initiatives to adopt and implement the abovementioned Development Code requirements, noting that port customers / site operators are responsible for all health and safety matters on their sites. We acknowledge tenant's rights to stack higher than 4-high in block stacks where approved under their DA
.

IMPROVING ROAD SAFETY ON PORT ROADS
________________

As part of our Road Safety Strategy, in May PBPL advised the port community that it had introduced a highly visible speed camera trailer, which is deployed at various locations around the Port.  Motorists may have also noticed an increased presence of marked and unmarked Queensland Police Service Vehicles and speed monitoring trailers.

Safety on the road is everyone's responsibility. Please slow down.

If you would like more information about our Road Safety Strategy, please contact PBPL's Health & Safety Manager, Tony Smith.

SPRING-TIME NEST BOX MONITORING
________________

Around one third of port land is green space and home to many species of native animals and birds.  PBPL has installed approximately 50 nest boxes throughout these areas to support native fauna and provide important, additional habitat for the native fauna.

Since 2008, our Environment Team has conducted nest box monitoring with Hollow Log Homes to better understand nest box use.  Our most recent monitoring event in September found the nest boxes being used by rainbow lorikeets, squirrel gliders, a wood duck and brush tail possums, with a high level of nest box usage overall.

You can read the
monitoring report on our website and watch a short video about how we conduct nest box monitoring.

PBPL'S SAFETY 1 FORUM ONLINE EVENT
________________

This year, we held an online Safety 1 Forum for the port community, themed 'Talking resilience in a COVID-19 world with Graeme Cowan' .

The event focused on mental health and wellbeing, with participants provided with practical steps and tools to help support personal resilience. In addition, one of PBPL's Directors, Jill Rossouw, provided a firsthand account of some of the trials and tribulations of living and working in Melbourne during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Congratulations to the recipients of this year's Health Champions Awards – you can
view the recipients here.

A special thanks to our sponsors – IOR, Patrick, QUBE and DP World – for sharing our commitment to health and safety. Your support is greatly appreciated and helps make the event possible.

 QUANDAMOOKA JARJUMS CAMP
________________

Port of Brisbane was proud to sponsor and participate in the Quandamooka Jarjums Camp on Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island) last month, along with DP World and Svitzer Australia.

The Quandamooka Jarjums Camp is a way for Year 6 school students to learn more about their culture and connection to Country through stories from local Elders and participating in cultural workshops; this year, these included painting, weaving and dance and enjoying traditional foods.

Employees from PBPL, DP World and Svitzer enjoyed a dance performance by the students on Cylinder Beach and took the opportunity to meet and talk with leaders from the host organisations, Yulu-Burri-Ba and Education Queensland.
You can watch a highlights reel of the Camp, here.
