On 20 October 2022, the Federal Government established a Strategic Fleet Taskforce to advise on the creation of a Maritime Strategic Fleet with the aim to strengthen Australia's economic sovereignty and support improved national security outcomes.

The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications
have issued a notice that as part of the first phase of the Taskforce's work, a broad consultation process with stakeholders helped inform the development of high-level strategic objectives for the fleet.

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) have made a formal request to the department for a brief of preliminary findings and / or information used in the Taskforce's progress reporting to Government.

In the interim, the Taskforce has issued a statement inviting interested stakeholders to provide proposals, options or ideas for the establishment of the fleet and how it may be operationalised- refer HERE
