For the fourth year running, Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd (PBPL) has received a 5-star GRESB rating – a globally recognised assessment that evaluates ESG performance and sustainability 'best practices' for real estate and infrastructure funds, companies and assets worldwide.

Based on data for the FY22 financial year, PBPL's overall score increased to 98/100 (up from 94/100 in 2020/21), ranking Port of Brisbane as the number 1 port in Australia out of 6 in our division (Port Companies – Maintenance and Operations) and the 31st infrastructure asset out of 681 globally.

PBPL CEO, Neil Stephens, said the Port was delighted to achieve the highest rating for the fourth consecutive year and to lead the way in the ports industry.

"This is an outstanding result, and we're very proud of what we're achieving across the business through our sustainability efforts," said Mr Stephens.

"When we first formalised our commitment to sustainability in 2019, we set ambitious 2030 sustainability goals across our four pillars of People, Prosperity, Partnerships and Planet.

"In July 2021, we took that commitment further by putting sustainability at the centre of our Business Strategy, and we're continuing to make strong progress towards these within our organisation and in collaboration with our customers and partners.

"We're seeking to be a sustainability leader within the port industry.  While we know we know there is much more work to be done on our sustainability journey, results such as these demonstrate that we are on a very positive path."

Key sustainability initiatives delivered/underway by PBPL include:

  • secured our first Sustainability Linked Loan
  • established a Health, Safety and Sustainability Board Sub-Committee to further embed these considerations into our corporate culture
  • maintained Bronze Accreditation as a Carbon Literate Organisation for the second year (delivered by ThinkZero in partnership with the Carbon Literacy Project)
  • maintained Skilled Workplace Recognition status by Mental Health First Aid Australia, first Australian port. In total, 32 employees have received Mental Health First Aid accreditation
  • completed a Climate Change Risk Assessment, aligned with the Task Force for Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD)
  • progress towards identifying, measuring and influencing Scope 3 emissions while Scope 1 and 2 emissions reduced by 49% on FY22 volumes
  • approximately 23% of all PBPL energy is generated by onsite renewables and all grid-sourced energy is now supplied from renewable sources.
