February 2024

CEO's message

Image
Welcome to the first edition of Port of Brisbane News for 2024.

Major property development continues across the Port, with five active construction sites underway for new and existing customer facilities, as well as construction of additional car parking at the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal.

Like many of our customers and partners, we're exploring new opportunities in the clean energy space. This year, we're undertaking our first battery storage trial to better understand the application of the new technology in our operations, with a new system recently installed at our PC1 building on Fisherman Islands.

Our teams have been out and about in the community, providing grant funding to local organisations and welcoming groups of energetic and curious school students here to the Port.

Property development continues at the Port

Our construction program is full steam ahead as development continues for customers across Fisherman Islands and our Port Gate and Port West estates.

Currently, a combined 21ha of land is under development for two new customers, Rogers Transport and Electrolux Group, and three existing customers, Blue Water ShippingiOR and Toll Group.

We're targeting completion of their new facilities during 2024, weather permitting, working closely with our customers and Principal Contractors. This includes our first 6-star Green-Star rated facility for Electrolux Group.

Curlew Street resurfacing works

Pavement resurfacing works will commence on Friday 9 February along Curlew Street between Bishop Drive and Peregrine Drive (Fisherman Islands), until Monday 11 March, weather permitting.

Full road closures will take place over three weekends, and reduced access down to single lane during weekdays will be in place throughout the works.

There will be no parking permitted along Curlew Street during this time. A temporary truck parking zone will be available on Peregrine Drive.

Access to The Island Café will be maintained at all times, with vehicle access via Peregrine Drive and pedestrian access available across Curlew Street under traffic management.

Please read the Port Alert for detailed information including location of the temporary truck parking zone and detour map.

Modern Slavery Statement

In December, we published our fourth annual Modern Slavery Statement in line with the Australian Government's reporting requirements.

Port of Brisbane has zero tolerance for modern slavery within our operations and supply chain and over the last 12 months we've driven various initiatives to strengthen our response to the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth). This work is supported by our Modern Slavery Steering Committee, comprising representatives from across our business.

Our Modern Slavery Statement is available on our website.

Energy storage amplified on Fisherman Islands

We kicked off the year with an exciting project at our PC1 building on Fisherman Islands, with works underway to install our first battery energy storage system. The trial project will help us better understand how we can utilise battery storage technology at the Port.

Once commissioned, the 233kWh battery will store excess power generated through our solar panels and will help manage power needs during non-daylight hours. Two new EV chargers are also being installed at the same time, for our people and customers to use once operational.

Bayside organisations kickstart year with funding boost

We were delighted to present two Bayside organisations, Bayside United Football Club (BUFC) and Pelican Seabird and Rescue Inc., with a funding boost from our Community Consultative Committee.

Our grant funding will help BUFC sponsor up to 10 local children from families experiencing financial hardship with a free, one-year soccer membership while Pelican Seabird and Rescue Inc. will use the funding to increase their medical equipment and services.

Funding of up to $2,500 is available for eligible organisations and charities through our CCC grant program. You can learn more on our website.

Recycling milestone reached

With an ambitious goal to eliminate PBPL-generated waste by 2030, our teams have made significant efforts to both avoid waste and recycle materials from our operations, with 52% of all waste recycled in FY23.

One of these is through the Containers for Change program, with over 35,000 cans and bottles recycled since July – through collections at the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal as well as the efforts by our teams at their worksites.

All funds raised go to our 2023/24 Employee Charity, Hummingbird House.

EcoMarines student ambassadors enjoy day at the Port

We loved hosting the EcoMarines Foundation 2023 CHECK prize competition winners – six students from Kenmore State High School – who took out the top prize for their solutions on how to mitigate future truck congestion coming in and out of the Port, which included rail connectivity.

Students spent the morning learning all about the Port – perhaps some future Port of Brisbane employees in the group!

We're a proud Impact Partner of the EcoMarines Foundation and look forward to the 2024 CHECK event later this year. You can find out more information on their website.
