Regulated tyre fee introduced today (1 March edition)

A fee on imported regulated tyres is being introduced by the Government today. The fee applies to loose tyres, as well as tyres attached to imported vehicles and aircraft.The fee will fund a nationwide tyre stewardship scheme, known as Tyrewise, which will see end-of-life tyres collected, processed and recycled to create new products from 1 September 2024 onwards.Importers of on-road motor vehicles (with regulated tyres attached) will pay the fee to NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi at initial registration. Importers of loose regulated tyres or off-road motor vehicles or aircraft (with regulated tyres attached) will be invoiced by the Ministry for the Environment.

   
  
   
Russian sanctions update

This week the Minister of Foreign Affairs announced further sanctions made under the Russia Sanctions Act 2022, with a focus on evasion.Of particular relevance to exporters and their agents is the ban on indirect exports of restricted goods to Russia and Belarus.

   
  
   
Phishing scam alert

Customs is aware of a scam email in circulation which appears to be from Customs but is likely a phishing scam.Customs has received a report of an email which asks recipients to vote for one of three options relating to a CSV file, and it contains a Customs staff signature.Do not open emails or attachments from Customs unless it is sent from an official Customs address (customs.govt.nz).Anyone who receives fraudulent emails should report it to the NetSafe scam reporting centre.

We're excited to see a brand new series of Dog Squad returning to our screens next Monday 4 March on TVNZ.Joining our favourite Customs dogs will be teams from New Zealand Police, Ministry for Primary Industries, Department of Conservation, and Auckland City Council plus a very warm welcome to our new friends from Kiwi Newfoundlands.Dog Squad airs on TVNZ 1 at 8pm, or can be streamed on TVNZ+.
