April 2024

CEO's message

Image
Welcome to this month's edition of Port of Brisbane News.

It's been a busy month for our teams engaging within the community and across the port.

We're continuing our reconciliation journey, guided by our 'Innovate' Reconciliation Action Plan. Our second RAP consolidates what was achieved through our first, 'Reflect' RAP, and we're optimistic about the opportunities ahead to engage with our people and stakeholders.

Applications are also open for our $100,000 Community Grant Program, closing at the end of this month. Every year, these grants provide a welcome boost to local and regional community organisations – please, help spread the word across your networks.

Works continue on the construction of a new roundabout on Fisherman Islands through April. We thank the port community for its patience and ask that all road users continue to drive safely through the work area.

Trade update

Containerised red meat exports have increased considerably this financial year with over 43,000 TEU exported in the year-to-date to February, representing an increase of 26% against the prior year.

High volumes of refrigerated beef shipped to the USA and China led the increase, while shipments to Japan and South Korea remained steady. According to Meat & Livestock Australia, Australia's cattle supply is now at its highest level in recent years. Overseas demand also remains strong, with the MLA anticipating red meat exports to remain at elevated levels for the foreseeable future.

2024/25 Community Grants closing soon

Applications are open for our $100,000 Community Grant Program, closing on 30 April.

Since 2013, over $1 million has been provided to community organisations through our Grant Program, supporting a wide range of projects and initiatives.

Individual, eligible organisations can apply for up to $15,000 in grant funding. Organisations with projects across the fields of education, community, and environment should consider the grant funding, with First Nations organisations strongly encouraged to apply.

PBPL's Innovate RAP

We're progressing our 'Innovate' Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) – PBPL's second RAP and the second stage of Reconciliation Australia's formal RAP program.

Endorsed by the PBPL Board and Reconciliation Australia, our Innovate RAP is focused on how we can continue to influence and positively contribute to reconciliation within in our community, as well investing responsibly in projects and partnerships that enable and empower local communities.

It was developed with input from employees across our business and we deeply appreciate and acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who provided their time, knowledge and perspectives throughout its development.

Head to our website to find out more.

Annual Pulse Check Survey

Every year, PBPL invites customers and stakeholders to participate in our Annual Pulse Check Survey to receive feedback on our performance and on issues of importance to the Port of Brisbane.

Thank you to the 175 customers and partners who participated in our 2023 survey, we greatly appreciate the time taken and constructive feedback you shared.

With PBPL donating $50 for every completed survey, our customers and stakeholders also helped raise a total of $8,750 for our 2023/24 Employee Charity, Hummingbird House. Thank you!

Curlew St / Peregrine Drive roundabout construction

Works are continuing on the construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of Curlew Street and Peregrine Drive on Fisherman Islands.

The temporary, changed traffic conditions include reduced lanes and speed restrictions. For the safety of construction workers and road users, we ask that all drivers allow extra time and adhere to the traffic management in place.

Works are anticipated to continue throughout April, weather permitting.

Maritime Stakeholder Forum

Thank you to our waterside operators and river stakeholders who joined the Maritime Stakeholder Forum at the Port in March.

It was an opportunity to come together with Maritime Safety Queensland and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority to discuss common operational issues of interest.

Sustainability recognition

Our team was delighted to be presented with an Infrastructure Innovation Award (Sustainability Category) from QIC, which recognised excellence in leading and supporting a number of key port infrastructure, logistics and technology initiatives.

With sustainability at the centre of our business, we remain keenly focused on reducing our impacts and supporting our port customers who are striving to do the same.
