86-2024: Deregulation of Plantago asiatica mosaic virus as a quarantine pest

8 May 2024

Who does this notice affect?

Importers of bulbs or nursery stock which are hosts of Plantago asiatica mosaic virus (and their customs brokers), Approved Arrangements (Class 6.11) and departmental staff.

What has changed?

The department has reviewed the regulatory status of Plantago asiatica mosaic virus (PlAMV). As a result, PlAMV is no longer considered a quarantine pest as it is now recognised as being present in Australia. Effective from 26 April 2024, any detections of PlAMV virus on imported plant material will not require biosecurity remedial actions for this pest. The department will contact permit holders and any Approved Arrangement sites who are currently managing detections of PlAMV on imported material.

Background

The department has determined that Plantago asiatica mosaic virus (PlAMV) no longer meets the definition of a quarantine pest given it is present in Australia and not under official control in any state or territory.

Import permits

This change does not impact import permit conditions.

Approved Arrangements (Class 6.11)

The department will also initiate updates to Approved Arrangements (Class 6.11) – Bulbs documentation to remove references to Plantago asiatica mosaic virus.
