Port News

June 2024

CEO's message

Image
Welcome to this month's edition of Port of Brisbane News.

Our people were out and about in May, supporting our local community during National Volunteers Week and celebrating National Reconciliation Week.

We're continuing to invest in our road network to improve safety and efficiency for customers, completing the construction of a new roundabout on Fisherman Islands.

Every year we look forward to our annual Safety 1 Forum for the port community. This year's forum will be held on 22 August and all port tenants are encouraged to attend. More details are below.

Trade update

Containerised shipments of sorghum exports have begun moving through the Port, following a disrupted and delayed harvest due to ongoing rain events during the first quarter of 2024. April and May volumes were particularly strong with just under 10,000TEU exported – the majority to China which accounted for 93% of the total exports, a similar trend to 2023.

Containerised log exports to China have also resumed in recent months following the recent removal of trade barriers.

PortBris 2060 consultation closed

Thank you to everyone who contributed their feedback and expertise as part of our consultation activities for PortBris 2060 during April and May. We will use the insights provided to help inform the development of our Draft PortBris 2060 Vision, which we look forward to sharing later this year.

You can learn more about the Project and our next steps on our website.

National Reconciliation Week

In May we were proud to host our annual National Reconciliation Week event with our people, customers and community partners.

Aligned to this year's national theme, Now More Than Ever, Aboriginal Elder, Aunty Kathyrn Fisher, performed a Smoking Ceremony before Baringa Barambah Meeanjinu delivered an inspiring Welcome to Country and keynote address. Thank you to everyone who joined us.

PBPL is on its own reconciliation journey, as we progress our 'Innovate' Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) – our second RAP and the second stage of Reconciliation Australia's formal RAP program.

IOR new facility opening

We were delighted to join our long-time customer, IOR, to help cut the ribbon on its new truck refuelling and service centre at our Port West Industrial Estate in Lytton.

The new facility has enabled iOR to centralise its operations at the Port, improving efficiency and productivity to support its operations now and into the future.

It's completion also marks a milestone for PBPL, with stage 1 of Port West now fully developed.

Congratulations to IOR and thank you to our delivery partners and PBPL team.

Safety 1 – save the date!

Our annual Safety 1 Forum will be held on Thursday 22 August, 12.00pm – 3:30pm at our Multiuser Terminal at the Port of Brisbane.

This year's theme 'Safer Together' will explore the interdependent nature of safety within workplaces – including safety leadership, culture, and behaviours. We are excited to share our keynote speaker is Antarctic expedition leader, bestselling author and leadership expert, Rachael Robertson.

The forum is open to all port tenants. Please contact events@portbris.com.au for more information or to register your interest. More information to come.

PBPL rolls up its sleeves for National Volunteer Week

In May, 27 of our employees volunteered 212 hours to mentor young people with The Smith Family, build and fill oyster baskets to support OzFish Unlimited Shellfish Recycling Program, and volunteer at the Farm Angels distribution centre in Chinchilla that supports farming families.

At PBPL, every employee receives two Volunteer Leave days every year, enabling our people to give back to the communities and charity partners close to their hearts.

New roundabout construction complete

Working with Principal Contractor, Malcolm Civil, our infrastructure team completed construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of Curlew Street and Peregrine Drive on Fisherman Islands in May. The works have improved road safety at the busy intersection and were delivered with minimal disruption.

Thank you to our customers and road users for your support during construction.

BICT milestones

In a milestone for the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal, over 1.5 million passenger movements have been recorded through the terminal since its opening on 2 June 2022.

The milestone was achieved on 25 May, 2024, with the Pacific Encounter in port. We also celebrated the 300th cruise ship call to the terminal on 5 June, again with the Pacific Encounter.

Works continue on the expansion of car parks 2 and 3, adding an additional 340 new car parks for passengers and staff. Works have also commenced on the installation of additional shade structures around the facility to further enhance passenger comfort.

Cruising this winter season? Find out everything you need to know about the BICT on our website.

Supply Chain Summit 2024

Our CEO, Neil Stephens, attended the Australian Logistics Council Supply Chain Summit where he delivered the closing remarks in May.

We were also thrilled to be awarded the ALC Innovation Award, alongside our partners Qube LogisticsO'Phee Trailers (The Drake Group), and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator for the Australian-first double-stack container vehicle, capable of carrying 12TEU containers.

Congratulations and thank you to all involved for your ongoing collaboration and support to drive innovation and support productivity at the Port.
