Purpose

This Market Access Advice (MAA) informs stakeholders of changes to listing requirements for seafood export establishments (including export registered vessels) producing product for export to the Republic of Korea from 21 June 2024.

Summary of key points 
 

On 20 June 2023, the Republic of Korea adopted amendments to their Aquatic Organism Disease Control Act. These amendments introduce the need for registration of seafood export establishments (including export registered vessels) producing fish and fish products for export to the Republic of Korea with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries from 21 June 2024.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (the department) understands this requirement only applies to seafood export establishments with no history of trade to the Republic of Korea. The department is seeking clarification on if this applies only to manufacturing establishments or all establishments involved in the export process.

The National Fishery Products Quality Management Service has not yet published guidance on the registration process. Once this information becomes available the department will publish an update to this MAA.

Seafood export establishments that do not have a history of trade with the Republic of Korea should confirm with their importer that product will be accepted at the border prior to export. The department may not be able to facilitate release of consignments should they be detained due to lack of establishment registration.

The Manual of Importing Country Requirements (Micor) will be updated to reflect this market access advice. The department encourages users of Micor to subscribe to the Micor update service for a commodity-specific email that lists changes that have been made the preceding week.

The department encourages all exporters to continue to work with their importers to ensure that current importing country requirements are met.
