Live garden snails for heliciculture draft report
2024-A09

Biosphere

Good afternoon,

We have released the Draft report: Importation of live garden snails (Cornu aspersum) for heliciculture.

This is an animal Biosecurity Advice. However, we are sharing this with you as it is relevant to plant biosecurity and may be of interest.

The draft report proposes that the importation of live garden snails (C. aspersum) from approved countries can be permitted, subject to a range of biosecurity requirements. Noting that:

  • Live garden snails would be imported as breed-stock to produce snails for human consumption.
  • The snails belong to the same species as those already present in Australia.

A number of risk management measures are proposed to reduce the biosecurity risk of these imports to an acceptable level.

For details of this risk analysis, please see the Biosecurity Advice and our website.

We expect to release the final report in late 2024 following consideration of stakeholder comments on the draft report.

If you have any questions about this risk analysis, please contact us at animalbiosecurity@aff.gov.au.

Kind regards

Alex
