On the 18th of July 2024, the Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) provided an updated member notice informing members on the latest developments of illegal logging reforms.
FTA / APSA has been extensively advocating for reforms in this area on behalf of members, and today the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) have opened a consultation process seeking feedback on the draft Illegal Logging Prohibition Rules 2024.
DAFF is inviting feedback on the draft Illegal Logging Prohibition Rules 2024, which are set to replace the existing Illegal Logging Prohibition Regulation 2012.
These new draft rules incorporate changes proposed during the Sunsetting Review and subsequent consultations. As a result, the Illegal Logging Prohibition Amendment (Strengthening Measures to Prevent Illegal Timber Trade) Bill 2024 was introduced for debate in the Senate in August 2024.
The Bill aims to establish a framework for the new rules, which will come into effect when the current Regulation expires on 1 April 2025.
We encourage you to review the draft and provide your feedback.
