Trio sentenced for smuggling half a million cigarettes

Two men and one woman were sentenced in the Auckland District Court last week for their involvement in smuggling nearly 500,000 cigarettes, evading approximately $675,000 in tobacco taxes.

They have been remanded in custody and on electronically monitored bail with strict curfew after Customs arrested and laid charges in June 2023 and will serve home detention sentences until they are deported.

Rotorua man jailed for child sexual abuse files

A 35-year-old Rotorua man was yesterday sentenced in the Rotorua District Court to seven-years-three-months' imprisonment on representative charges of importation and possession of objectionable material.

Customs detected the man sharing child sexual exploitation material over the internet using peer-to-peer software on his computer. Further enquiries established he lived in Rotorua.

In February 2023, Customs investigators conducted a search warrant at the man's home. Onsite forensic screening identified image and video files of children being sexually abused, resulting in his arrest for the importation and possession of objectionable material.

Forthcoming consultation on Goods Clearance Fees

The Coalition Government's Q3 Action plan for New Zealand includes a commitment to begin consultation on changes to improve the efficiency and fairness of goods fees by 30 September 2024.

Customs and the Ministry for Primary Industries have been working with a range of stakeholders to scope potential options, to ensure that options consulted on are well developed, and the information needed to assess them is provided through the consultation document.

Once the Government has determined the options that it will consult on, we will provide a link to information on the consultation process and the consultation material in forthcoming Customs Release issues.
