First Nations peoples were Australia's first traders. Today, First Nations products and services – from native bush foods and railway signals to fashion and acoustics solutions – can be found all over the world.
Austrade, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Supply Nation partnered to produce the inaugural First Nations Businesses Succeeding Internationally report. It examines the experiences of First Nations businesses involved in international trade and tourism.
The report found that the First Nations goods exporters studied generated over $670 million in turnover in 2022–23. Meanwhile, First Nations businesses identified as operating in tourism-related industries generated nearly $1 billion in turnover and employed almost 7,000 workers.
