Imported Food Notice (IFN) 07-24 advises stakeholders of the new food safety requirements proposed for imported dates, melons, enoki mushrooms, pufferfish and kava.

Key points:

  • Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has published risk advice for imported dates, melons, enoki mushrooms and pufferfish. The advice has identified hazards which present a potential risk to public health.
  • In response, we will classify these foods as 'risk foods' and are proposing new risk management measures for their import. This will provide assurance of their safety.
  • Changes are also being proposed to existing requirements for kava.
  • We are consulting on the proposed food safety measures. These are:
    • food safety management certification of dates and melons
    • analytical testing for enoki mushrooms
    • foreign government certification of pufferfish
    • inspection of kava from New Zealand.
  • Your feedback will help inform the final risk management measures and implementation of the proposed changes.
