CEO's message

Welcome to this month's edition of Port of Brisbane News.

Over the last 12 months, we've made significant strides towards our 2030 sustainability goals, with our progress set out in our 2023/24 Sustainability Report released late last month. We also achieved our fifth consecutive 5-star GRESB rating, further recognition of our work in this space.

The Brisbane International Cruise Terminal has set sail on its third cruise season, with passengers able to enjoy a major new artwork by renowned Quandamooka artist, Delvene Cockatoo-Collins.

We've also had a busy month collaborating with community and industry partners including our long-standing support of the annual Quandamooka Jarjums Camp and this year's UQ Ventures Industry Challenge on Ocean Innovation.

Trade update

According to the latest report from ABARES, Australia's chickpeas production is projected to reach approximately 1.3m tonnes, with Queensland growers anticipated to produce as much as 50% of the total output despite severe weather experienced in some of the growing areas in recent weeks.

Australia's harvest is now underway, and we're anticipating bulk and containerised chickpea shipments to begin moving through Port over the coming weeks and months destined for global export markets including India, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

2023/24 Sustainability Report released

Our 2030 Sustainability Program is aligned to four pillars – People, Partnerships, Prosperity and Planet.

2024 Quandamooka Jarjums Camp

Over the last nine years, PBPL has proudly supported the annual Quandamooka Jarjums Camp held on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island).

This year, the Indigenous cultural immersion program hosted 60 Year 6 students from Dunwich State School and schools across the Bayside.

Led by Dunwich State School, Minjerribah Moorgumpin Elders in Council, and Yulu Burri Ba and with the support of PBPL, DP World, Svitzer and WGA, volunteers came together with Elders and local Bayside teachers and principals to help set-up camp early in the week.

Members of our Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group had the opportunity to experience a day of storytelling, traditional dance and traditional food prepared by the students before helping to pack down another successful camp.

First Nation's artwork unveiled at BICT

The State Government has declared the CEP a 'coordinated project' requiring an environmental impact statement. The draft terms of reference is currently being prepared by the State Government.

2024 UQ Ventures Innovation Challenge

Some of the brightest minds from The University of Queensland (UQ) pitched innovative solutions to pressing problems facing Australia's oceans and marine ecosystems at a showcase event for the 2024 UQ Ventures Innovation Challenge.

With the Port of Brisbane intrinsically linked to the oceans and marine environment, PBPL was proud to be the major partner for this year's Challenge.

Over the last two months, 123 students across 22 teams explored the challenges in depth, applying their knowledge, skills and passion to develop real-world, innovative solutions.

Congratulations to the finalists and winners!
