DAFF IIAN 252/2024 - Two new fumigants under consideration

Friday, November 8, 2024

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) has received advice from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) in relation to advice concerning two new fumigants under consideration.

DAFF is currently assessing the suitability of two new fumigants for use as approved treatments. These fumigants are promising alternatives to the widely used fumigant, Methyl Bromide.

Ethanedinitrile is being assessed for the treatment of arthropod pests associated with de-barked timber and logs of Pinus radiata and Pseudotsuga menziesii from New Zealand.

Ethyl formate in mixture with carbon dioxide is being assessed for the treatment of brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) on import pathways.

Establishment of these fumigants will be phased, commencing with offshore use (as a pre-arrival treatment) followed by onshore use. Each phase requires assessment and consideration.

Ethyl formate treatment will not be included on the approved BMSB treatment list for the 2024-2025 BMSB season.
