The path forward: phase out of live sheep exports by sea announcement 

The Australian Government is providing a further $32.7 million to the transition assistance package for the phase out of live sheep exports by sea, bringing the overall package to $139.7 million.

Be a part of co-designing assistance measures 

The transition package includes $45.5 million for programs to be co-designed with industry to assist sheep producers and the associated supply chain prepare for the phase out. The process will bring together people with personal experience of (or connection to) the issue from across the supply chain, along with others who can contribute valuable insights and relevant expertise.

The Australian sheep meat industry has been experiencing consistent growth, which is expected to continue into 2025. The gross value of sheep meat is set to rise to more than $5?billion in 2024-25, the highest number in over 10 years. This article explores how production volumes, demand for and prices of sheep meat have grown according to ABARES and MLA.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry will continue to work to regulate the welfare of sheep exported live by sea until the trade ends on 1 May 2028
