These buoys will provide continuous, 24/7 monitoring of water quality at key locations near the Mersey River and further offshore, as part of TasPorts' commitment to minimising its impact on the marine environment.
The early deployment of the monitoring buoys is a proactive approach to enable the collection of baseline data, ensuring TasPorts can effectively monitor and respond to any changes in water quality during the upcoming campaign, aligned with its Port of Devonport Maintenance Dredging Long-term Monitoring and Management Plan 2024-2034.
The five water monitoring buoys will remain in place until June 30, 2025, following the completion of the maintenance dredging campaign. During this time, the data collected will support ongoing assessments of the marine environment's health and provide valuable insights into the impact of port activities.
As part of TasPorts' commitment to transparency, a rolling average of live water quality data from the monitoring buoys will be available on TasPorts' official website, allowing the public and stakeholders to stay informed about the health of the marine environment in the region. This is planned to go live in January 2025.
