CEO's message

Welcome to the March edition of Port of Brisbane News.

Like much of southeast Queensland, a significant amount of focus and energy this month was working with Maritime Safety Queensland, our customers and stakeholders, as we prepared for and responded to Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

By working collaboratively, the port community minimised
disruption while prioritising the safety of people and property. I wish to again extend my thanks to all involved for your support and collaboration during the event as the Port returned quickly to normal operations.

In other news, March saw the start of the national cotton season – a key agricultural
commodity handled through the Port – with members from our Trade team at a key
industry forum in Toowoomba for the occasion.

Building positive community partnerships is a key area of focus for us, and our
Community Grant Program supports the valuable work of community organisations locally and throughout our trade hinterland. If you know an organisation that could use up to $15,000 funding, please encourage them to get in touch with our community team.

TC Alfred response and recovery

Thank you to all our customers and stakeholders who, under the guidance of Maritime Safety Queensland, worked together to prepare the Port of Brisbane ahead of TC Alfred earlier in the month.

While, under the direction of the Regional Harbour Master, the Port's shipping operations were temporarily suspended at the start of the week, the Port was able to re-start operations quickly with no significant damage reported to port infrastructure. While any disruption is unwelcome, we were pleased to see operations resume as quickly as possible.

In late March we hosted a forum for customers and supply chain partners to ensure we
captured learnings from the event.

Attended by approximately 50 people in person and online, it was an opportunity to reflect on what went well and what could be learned, with the aim to further enhance the port
community's resilience and future preparedness for these types of events.

It was a constructive and valuable discussion capturing landside, waterside and supply chain stakeholder feedback.

Community Grant Program – applications open!

Applications are open for our 2025/26 Community Grant Program.

A total of $100,000 in funding is on offer for eligible organisations and registered not-for-profits, with up to $15,000 available.

We encourage organisations focused on education, community, and environment to consider applying, with First Nations organisations strongly encouraged to apply.

Trade update

We welcomed Hoegh Borealis on her maiden call to the Port of Brisbane on Wednesday 12 March.

The 199.9m long, 37.7m wide 'pure car truck carrier' vessel is one of twelve vessels in Hoegh's newly built Aurora class fleet, with 14 decks of cargo storage and the capacity to carry up to 9,100 car equivalent units.

PBPL joins industry to kick-off cotton season

PBPL was a proud partner of Queensland's Australian Cotton Shippers Association (ACSA) 'Post Farm Gate Forum' in Toowoomba to celebrate the start of the Australian cotton season this month.

Our Trade team joined more than 100 industry peers at the Forum, including key stakeholders in the cotton sector.

Cotton ranks among the top 10 agricultural commodities produced in Australia, and more than 50% of the nation's cotton is exported through Port of Brisbane, connecting local producers to key international markets including China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Indonesia.

Patrick Terminals/Navy open day

Congratulations to our customer, Patrick Terminals Brisbane and the Royal Australian Navy for their successful open day earlier this month.

More than 3,000 visitors enjoyed the unique opportunity to explore the HMAS Choules and learn more about working on the waterfront, while the Patrick Terminals' team BBQ raised funds for Mission to Seafarers Brisbane.

Channel Enhancement Project

To meet the needs of Queensland's growing population, the Port of Brisbane is planning for the future. The proposed 25-year Channel Enhancement Project aims to improve efficiency, reduce vessel emissions and cater for the future needs of the global shipping market.

The draft Terms of Reference for the project's Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) are being developed by the Office of the Queensland Coordinator-General.
