Welcome to the West Gate Tunnel Project Update. Read about our construction milestone, how to use the new citybound express lanes and a works wrap.

We are celebrating a major milestone as the project heads to completion, with an iconic bright green walking and cycling bridge into the heart of the Docklands now open to the public. 

Inspired by the West Gate Bridge design and suspended from two 40-metre tall steel pylons by a series of cables, the 220-metre long bridge takes bike riders diagonally over busy Footscray Road.

The bridge links directly into to the Docklands retail precinct, the Capital City trail,?the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail, as well as the veloway along Footscray Road which will be open later this year.

With the installation of road barriers and finalising the citybound express lanes, drivers from the western suburbs can now enjoy a smooth run from the M80 Ring Road and Princes Freeway to the West Gate Bridge, using the three new citybound express lanes on the West Gate Freeway.

Drivers wanting to get to the inner west suburbs (Brooklyn, Yarraville, Spotswood, South Kingsville and Altona North) will need to stick to the left lanes and exit at Millers and Williamstown Road citybound exit ramps.

The far right lanes will run direct from the M80 Ring Road interchange to the West Gate Bridge. You won't be able to exit the freeway from these lanes.

The competition closed last week with over 3,000 suggestions, with Bunurong, Bunjil (wedge tailed eagle), Eureka and Batman among those nominated.

We'll share the winning names before the tunnels open later this year so stay tuned.

During these closures, our crews undertook a massive task of removing a large 50-metre tower crane that helped build the outbound tunnel exit near Millers Road in the West Gate Freeway.
