Western Sydney International Airport Major construction wraps and terminal unveiled taking Sydney’s new 24-hour airport closer to take-off

Wednesday, June 11, 2025

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) have received welcomed news of a major milestone in the development of Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI), with the official unveiling of its state-of-the-art terminal marking the completion of major construction works.

Sydney's new 24-hour airport is now one step closer to welcoming its first passengers, as WSI CEO Simon Hickey was joined by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Minister Catherine King, and senior executives from key aviation partners including Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Menzies Aviation and dnata to celebrate the occasion.

The terminal, a collaboration between global design leaders Zaha Hadid Architects and Australia's COX Architecture, with construction led by Multiplex and Woods Bagot, reflects the region's natural beauty and First Nations heritage while integrating next-generation sustainability and technology features. More than 6,000 solar panels, a climate-responsive façade, and a rainwater harvesting system position WSI as one of the most environmentally advanced airports in the world.

Mr Hickey acknowledged the significant contributions of WSI's delivery and civil works partners, including Bechtel, CPB Contractors/ACCIONA JV, and AeroWest, as well as the thousands of workers, many from Western Sydney, who brought the terminal to life. Since inception, over $500 million has been spent with Western Sydney-based businesses, creating jobs and building long-term economic opportunities for the region.

The terminal design is inspired by the surrounding Blue Mountains and the culture of the Dharug people, with extensive use of sandstone and views that connect the terminal to Country. Travellers will benefit from a seamless experience, with both domestic and international gates under one roof and smart technology for efficient movement through the airport.

While the main build is complete, interior fit-out including retail and airline lounges will continue ahead of WSI's scheduled opening for passenger and cargo services in late 2026.
