Fremantle Ports - Adverse Weather Monitoring and Operational Guidance

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) wish to update members of some important information received from Fremantle Ports in relation to the increased risk of adverse weather conditions:

Please see the notice following:

Fremantle Ports would like to remind all port users and operators of the increased risk of adverse weather conditions. Strong winds, gales, and other severe weather events may impact vessel operations, berthing, anchorage management, and potentially cause disruptions across the supply chain.

To manage these risks, Fremantle Ports' Harbour Master's Office continuously monitors conditions using sources such as the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), Weatherzone, and Windy. Fremantle's Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) will continue to provide updates to vessel agents and industry stakeholders in line with our Adverse Weather Monitoring and Management Procedure.

For reference, a flowchart outlining the Harbour Master's decision-making process is attached - seen here. Please note that this is provided as a guide only. Under the Port Authorities Act, the Harbour Master retains sole discretion over decisions to evacuate or retain vessels within the port.

We strongly encourage all port users to establish or review their own adverse weather management plans and site-specific protocols. While Fremantle Ports may issue information in certain conditions, each operator remains responsible for ensuring their operations are adequately prepared for weather-related risks.

Further guidance is available in the Fremantle Ports Port Information Guide 2025 and
HMOP 04 – Adverse Weather Monitoring and Management Procedure.
