Salta brings two major intermodal terminals to market in Melbourne's South-east and West

Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) is pleased to share the following opportunity from Salta, with Colliers appointed to pre-lease two significant intermodal terminal developments, the Dandenong South Inland Port (DSIP) and Altona Inland Port (AIP).

Together, the projects represent a major advancement in Melbourne's transition to a rail-enabled freight logistics network.

Both terminals connect directly by rail to East and West Swanson Dock at the Port of Melbourne, enabling efficient container movements between the Port and key industrial precincts while reducing reliance on road transport.

Positioned within Melbourne's two largest freight catchments, together accounting for approximately 78% of all metropolitan full import TEU, the intermodal terminals provide tenants with direct rail access to the areas generating the majority of Victoria's containerised freight task. DSIP is supported by 15 available daily return freight paths enabling reliable rail movements to and from the Port. AIP rail paths are unrestricted, being on a freight line.

Members interested in potential leasing opportunities or learning more about these intermodal terminals are encouraged to review the details below.

Two market shaping intermodal terminal developments in Melbourne's South-east and West are set to enhance the city's freight and supply chain capacity, with Colliers appointed to bring both assets to market for pre-lease on behalf of Salta.

Located within two of Melbourne's most sought-after industrial corridors, the Dandenong South Inland Port (DSIP) and Altona Inland Port (AIP) are designed to deliver large-scale rail-enabled logistics infrastructure capable of supporting Victoria's rapidly growing freight task.

Dandenong South Inland Port (DSIP)

Located within Salta's master-planned Nexus Dandenong South Industrial Precinct, stage 1 of the Dandenong South Inland Port will feature a 79,911 square metre purpose-built intermodal terminal incorporating two 790 metre rail sidings.

These sidings connect directly to an existing 917 metre signalised private rail spur, funded jointly by the State and Commonwealth governments through a $28 million government-funded rail infrastructure investment, providing immediate integration with Melbourne's rail freight network.

Importantly, the facility also benefits from 15 available daily return freight paths, enabling operators to interface seamlessly and reliably with the Cranbourne line while maintaining consistent rail movements to and from the Port of Melbourne.

Strategically, DSIP sits within Melbourne's South-east freight catchment, which accounts for approximately 40% of all metropolitan full import TEU, making it the single largest freight catchment in Victoria.
The terminal will include post-tensioned hardstand engineered for 100 tonne loads, container stacking up to five high, and the opportunity to secure a 28,254 m² co-located intermodal warehouse and office facility, with flexibility to configure the facility according to the tenants' specific requirements. The site also provides future expansion potential, allowing operators to scale their operations over time.

Altona Inland Port (AIP)

The Altona Inland Port (AIP) is positioned within Melbourne's rapidly expanding Western industrial corridor and represents the most significant rail-connected freight opportunity in the west.

AIP sits within the Western catchment, which accounts for approximately 38% of metropolitan full import TEU, the second largest freight catchment and home to some of Australia's highest volume industrial precincts.

AIP includes an existing 21,530 m² premium high-clearance intermodal warehouse, featuring five on-grade and five recessed loading docks, alongside flexible hardstand solutions designed to support a range of container handling and logistics configurations.

Together, the DSIP and AIP intermodal terminals place operators at the centre of Melbourne's freight network, spanning the two largest import catchments in the metropolitan area and providing direct rail connectivity to the Port of Melbourne.

Victoria is Australia's freight capital, moving more freight per person than any other state, with freight volumes forecast to more than double by 2050. As Melbourne's population continues to grow and supply chains evolve, rail-enabled logistics infrastructure will play an increasingly important role in supporting efficient and sustainable freight movements.

Clarenzo Perna, Director - Logistics & Strategic Projects at Salta, said:
"These intermodal terminal opportunities reflect Salta's long-standing commitment to Victoria's industrial and logistics sectors and our ability to anticipate future infrastructure needs. Modern logistics operators require - scale, flexibility, connectivity and certainty. The Dandenong South and Altona intermodal terminals bring these elements together in highly strategic locations, offering occupiers a ready-made platform to operate efficiently from day one."
