Customs is aware of cases where ethyl alcohol and other goods imported for manufacture under duty-free status are being offered for further sale post import – meaning the goods are incorrectly classified and therefore subject to excise-equivalent duty.

Customs is further aware of cases of incorrect or inappropriate activity concerning permit compliance in relation to ethyl alcohol and other goods imported duty-free for manufacture.

As a result, an Important Notice has been issued on compliance rules and obligations and warns that such activity will be subject to enforcement action, including collection of duty.

Recent Customs activity located differences concerning the classification of the tyres suitable for multiple use with SUVs and light trucks/UTEs. Customs' website page Fee for regulated tyres under the Waste Minimisation (Tyres) Regulations 2023 has been updated with further guidance and/or rulings involving SUV and light truck tyres.

Importers of seeds and their agents are advised that the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) is seeking feedback on a proposed group standard for treated seed. This proposal may affect anyone importing treated seed into New Zealand. Public consultation will run from 18 August to 29 September. Customs arrested a British national who injured two officers while being detained for smuggling approximately 16.8 kilograms of methamphetamine through Auckland International Airport on 4 September 2026.

Customs officers have seized approximately 43.9 kilograms of methamphetamine from a shipping container at the Port of Tauranga. The drugs have an estimated street value of NZ$13 million and an estimated social harm cost of NZ$46 million.
