Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) has received advice from the Inspector-General of Biosecurity (IGB) seeking member input into its independent review of the use of technology in supporting Australia's biosecurity operations.
This follows FTA's earlier engagement with the IGB on its review of documentation requirements for biosecurity risk assessment, including facilitating direct engagement between the IGB review team and FTA members to demonstrate practical operational processes.
The latest request provides another opportunity for FTA members to put forward examples of technology, automation and emerging capability being used across the freight, logistics, shipping and related sectors that may have application to biosecurity operations.
The IGB is currently conducting an independent review of the use of technology in supporting Australia's biosecurity operations. The review is examining how technology is used across the biosecurity continuum to support the management of biosecurity risks and operational decision-making, including opportunities to improve effectiveness, efficiency, integration and future capability.
As part of this review, the IGB is seeking input from industry stakeholders regarding technologies that are currently being used, trialled, or planned within the cargo, logistics, freight, shipping and related sectors that may have relevance to biosecurity operations. The IGB is particularly interested in examples of technologies that: - support risk assessment, targeting or decision-making
- enhance inspection, screening or detection activities
- improve data or information sharing between organisations
- utilise artificial intelligence or automation
- may have future applications within the Australian biosecurity system.
Where possible, it would be helpful if examples could include: - a brief description of the technology
- the problem or business need it is intended to address
- the current stage of implementation (in use, pilot, proof-of-concept, under investigation, etc.)
- any observed benefits, lessons learned or implementation challenges
- any considerations relevant to biosecurity.
Responses would be appreciated by 9 October 2026, directly to the review team at InspGenBiosecurity@aff.gov.au and may be referenced in the review; however, individual organisations will not be identified without prior agreement. FTA encourages members with relevant technologies or innovations to consider providing input to the review. This is a useful opportunity to demonstrate practical industry capability and help inform the future application of technology across Australia's biosecurity system.
