What has changed?
The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has completed a review of fresh fruit and vegetable import pathways to ensure import conditions remain scientifically up to date and continue to achieve Australia's Appropriate Level of Protection (ALOP). The review identified several areas where existing import requirements are not adequately addressing the biosecurity risks associated with certain imported commodities.
To strengthen oversight of imports and ensure arrangements remain aligned with Australia's biosecurity and regulatory requirements, all fresh citrus fruit from Egypt will transition to an import permit pathway from 15 September 2026. From this date, importers must obtain a valid import permit before importing eligible fresh citrus fruit from Egypt into Australia.
The change applies to:
- Citrus sinensis
- Citrus aurantifolia
- Citrus latifolia
- Citrus limon
- Citrus reticulata
- Citrus × paradisi
How to apply for an import permit
From 15 September 2026, importers wishing to import fresh citrus fruit from Egypt will be required to hold a valid import permit issued by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
Applications can be lodged through the department's Biosecurity Import Conditions (BICON) system. Importers should ensure they provide all required supporting documentation and meet the applicable import conditions for fresh citrus fruit from Egypt.
