WA introduces bill to progress freight rail buyback

Western Australia has taken another step toward potentially taking direct control of its freight rail network by introducing legislation to provide a legal framework for a future transaction.

The Rail Freight System (Acquisition and Reorganisation) Bill 2026 is intended to enable the State Government to acquire the leased freight rail operation if ongoing negotiations and due diligence conclude that doing so is economically and financially responsible.
